Description

Kletten is Helle’s smallest blade yet and their first everyday carry, is a pocket-sized companion for simple, everyday tasks. Based on 87 years of Scandinavian design, the Kletten is an heirloom quality gentleman’s knife with a slim, elegant and handcrafted finish. The characteristic curly birch scales add depth of pattern and color to each handle, reinforced with stainless steel liners and a stable lockback design. As a result, the Kletten feels and performs like a small fixed blade in use. The forward finger guard and contoured shape provide a secure three-finger grip. At just 3 inches long folded, the Kletten doesn’t compromise on capability. The 2 inch drop point blade is made of Helle’s renowned triple laminated stainless steel with a razor-sharp Scandinavian flat grind.

Kletten is designed for the small adventures that are not planned. It is named after the hill overlooking the village of Holmedal that the locals use for getting out after work. Kletten means “small mountain or large hill” in Norwegian – an apt description in many ways.

Since early times, the Norwegian knife has been an important companion in everyday life. Norwegian knife manufacturing today is clearly influenced by traditional shapes and materials that were established hundreds of years ago. A well-made leather sheath and handles of wood, leather, and antler seem to be a legacy that Norwegians want to preserve. A/S Helle Fabrikker is dedicated to honoring this legacy by developing knives that are on the leading edge of technology, yet still maintain the traditional look and feel of a truly Norwegian knife. Unique in Helle knives is the laminated stainless steel used to produce a tough, razor-sharp blade. The technology was developed by their company in cooperation with a Norwegian steel mill. This high performance steel is available only in their knives, and gives each blade a unique combination of high strength and long lasting sharpness. Laminated steel is another Norwegian tradition that is rarely found in other parts of the world.

Maintenance
Helle knives are designed to retain their sharpness as a lifelong outdoors companion. But it is still important to take care of your knife and its sheath.
The Handle.     Dry the handle with a soft cloth if wet and wax occasionally.
The Blade.       Wipe the blade with a soft cloth if wet and treat with grease occasionally.

Sharpening
Use a diamond tool or a wet stone for sharpening. Place the knife bevel flat to the sharpening tool and work the entire blade. Work one side until you can feel a slight burr on the opposite side. Switch side and repeat the procedure until you feel the burr on the first side. You have now established an edge.

Remove the burr by stroking the blade gently over the sharpening surface on both sides, as if cutting very thin slices. Keep the bevel flat towards the sharpener and move from side to side until the burr is gone.

If the blade is very dull or damaged, use a fine-grained grindstone and plenty of water and sharpen until you have a raw edge. Use much cooling liquid and never sharpen on a dry stone. A hot-ground edge looses its heat treatment and ruins the blade.
